Headaches - Controlling Headaches Through Choices

While you cannot completely control getting or wiping out the pain of headaches there are things that you can do to help the situation. Understanding and avoiding the things that trigger headaches will go a long way in alleviating pain. Making good lifestyle choices based on reducing the likelihood of headaches is also a positive first step.

Posture is one of the most common contributors to headache pain, if not the actual cause, and one of the easiest to control. Though it requires self-reminding and discipline, it's possible to make long-term changes to optimize posture and minimize headaches. Good posture helps keep muscles from tensing at the wrong time and in the wrong ways. It supports the skeleton and allows for efficient movement.

When standing, avoid standing for long periods with more weight on one foot than the other. A balanced stance allows for freedom of movement in any direction and avoids selective tension that can cause spinal misalignment. That misalignment is a common contributor to the causes of headaches.

Similar considerations apply to sitting. Sit up straight, but not so straight as to be over-tense. If working at the computer, keep the forearms straight ahead and the shoulders squared, with both feet flat on the floor. If you tend to have one foot up on the chair base, at least switch feet from time to time.

Stretch regularly. Keep the muscles loose and blood flowing well by gentle stretching on a regular basis throughout the day. In the morning, when muscles are more likely to be cold and stiff, ease into it especially slowly. Blood carries in nutrients and takes away used biochemical products. Warm, limber muscles helps optimize that process.

Stress is another major contributor to headaches. Even when not the direct cause, it can up the odds of getting one and worsen an existing headache. Before reaching for the drugs, practice some simple methods for minimizing stress.

Keep in mind that stress is a combination of internal and external factors. It isn't just potentially unpleasant events that produce stress, but the evaluation of your own ability to deal with them. Stress is neither 'all in the mind', nor solely due to external circumstances. So the solution isn't 'mind over matter' nor avoiding all potentially unpleasant situations.

Regular exercise and a good diet help reduce existing stress and decrease the odds of it occurring. Meditation techniques are helpful to many, though even just a few minutes of quiet deep breathing and focus on a peaceful memory can help considerably.

Lack of sleep is one of the potential triggers of migraine and other forms of headache. Get plenty of rest. Sleep deprivation can accumulate over time and it contributes to and heightens stress as well. Sometimes it's necessary to push, but a lifestyle that precludes adequate sleep is unhealthy. Headaches are one inevitable result.

Even mild depression can trigger headaches as well as intensify the pain. Controlling depression will help to reduce the occurrence and severity of headaches. Combating depression with drugs and/or therapy is a wise and healthy choice and will have an impact on headaches.

Headaches occur pretty regularly but are still not completely understood.

Memories: A Jonas Story Ch 39

Chapter 39- Nick left after I had fallen asleep. I was glad to hear that my dad fully approved of how Nick was "handling the situation," but little did he know Nick was just being Nick and not giving me special treatment cuz I had cancer. He was giving me special treatment because he loved me. I woke up the next morning with a violent headache: this was becoming a daily routine because my headaches were always worse in the morning. As usual, I muscled through it and got ready for school. Again, throughout the whole day, everyone stared at me. It was getting old and I just wished I could crawl under a rock. After school I had my sister drive me to the studio because with all my built up emotions I wanted to be able to just get everything out in music. That was a much healthier way than punching a wall or some other odd things people do to control their anger. It was when I was trying to read my music when I noticed that my eye sight wasn't the same anymore. The notes and the staffs were getting blurry, which was strange to me since I had been seeing fine all day. And then I remembered I hadn't really looked at something up close that day since school had been basically pointless. I started to get scared: this had never happened to me before, even the first time I was sick. To make sure that I wasn't dreaming, I shook my head and looked back down at the sheet music only to find that I was still stuck in that hellish nightmare. I started to strum on my guitar to get my mind off of things and once I did that it was like no one else existed. It was like I was the only one on earth and nothing could change that: except when Nick decided to come into the studio and start playing piano while I was about to start singing. When I heard a chord play behind me, I whipped around and when I saw Nick my whole day got ten times better. He smiled when he saw the happiness on my face. "How did you know I was here?" "I came to your house and asked for you and Cassie said you wanted to come here, so that's why I'm here. I can leave if you want privacy." That was the last thing I wanted now that he was there. "No, don't go. I would miss you too much." That was corny, but I didn't care. I put on a puppy dog pouty face and watched the smile creep back onto his face. Nick got up from the piano and came over to kiss me. When we parted I smiled up at Nick. "Is that better?" Nick smiled again. "Much." I let go of Nick and went to look at my music for a second time. It was still blurry. Nick saw my strain that I was producing in order to see better, so he came over and took the sheet from me. "Need glasses?" "I don't understand; I've always had 20/20 vision." Nick looked at me with concern pouring out of him, so I thought of a quick excuse. "It's probably just this headache I have." I gave a weak smile and sat down on the stool behind me. Nick watched skeptically as I tried to play off as if nothing happened. He handed the music back and I set it on the music stand next to me to keep it stable. I started playing and while I was strumming away, I closed my eyes. When I opened them I saw the smile on Nick's face, but then I started to feel like something was very wrong. I lightly hopped off the stool and went to the music stand searching frantically for my music. Nick watched me as I searched, eyeing me suspiciously. "What are you looking for Mads?" "My music." The silence after I said that was uncanny. "Um...Madison, it's on the stand." "No it's not. It's not here." Nick came over to the stand and looked at the music. He picked up the first sheet and handed it to me. "It was right on top. You put it there." "When?" Nick almost jumped back. He took my arms in his hands and looked at me. "Madison, you just put the music on the stand right before you started playing." When Nick saw the worried look on my face, he started to chuckle. "Okay Madison, the joke's over." I looked at him with tears in my eyes. "This isn't a joke. I...um... I have to go home now." Nick stumbled behind me as I ran out of the studio to where Cassie was parked. I needed to get out of that studio as fast as possible because I had just realized my condition was getting worse than I had ever imagined. Song: Time Artist: Hootie and the Blowfish

As a result, constricting the blood vessels may be only attacking a peripheral issue and the potential side effects may represent an unnecessary risk.
As those hormonal changes smooth out during the second and third trimesters, as the body adjusts, headaches typically become less frequent and intense. For a type often misdiagnosed, sinus headaches, the condition that produces pain may be the result of a deviated septum. They are, after all, connected. Excess exercise can often produce headaches, though how much is excessive will, of course, vary from person to person. Tension headaches are so-named because they are believed to be the result of (and to produce) different kinds of muscle tension.

The meaning is similar. Best to order the regular for a few months. Triptans are of this type. When they contract (or dilate) the nerves are activated, sending signals to the brain. You need to make sure you are prepared to deal with side effects in order to reduce the pain of the headaches.
